The short answer

Bonding is the quickest fix for a small chip or gap. Veneers cover the front of a tooth for bigger shape and colour changes. Crowns cover the whole tooth when it's cracked or heavily filled. The state of your tooth decides.

Which one fits you?

  • Choose veneers if

    • You want to change the shape or colour of several front teeth as one set.
    • You want porcelain that holds its colour.
    • The teeth underneath are mostly healthy.
  • Choose a crown if

    • The tooth is cracked, heavily filled or root-canal treated.
    • You need strength, not just looks.
    • A filling or veneer wouldn't hold the tooth together.
  • Choose bonding if

    • It's one small thing: a chip, a little gap, an uneven edge.
    • You want it done in one visit.
    • You want to keep all of your own tooth.
    • You're fine to refresh or repair it down the track.

What we'd check at your consult

The deciding factor is the tooth itself, not the brochure. Here's what we look at.

  • How much healthy tooth is left. This is the biggest decider between the three.
  • Your bite, and whether grinding could chip new work.
  • The colour you want, and whether whitening should come first.
  • A scan and photos, so you can see the plan before anything starts.
  • A clear written quote for each option, with no pressure to decide on the day.

The right answer depends on your mouth. A consult and scan settles it.

Planning to whiten as well?

Whitening lifts natural teeth only. It won't change the colour of a veneer, a crown or bonding. If you want a brighter shade, whiten first, then we match the new work to it.

Veneers, crowns and bonding: common questions

Can I mix bonding, veneers and crowns?

Yes, and many smile plans do. For example, a crown on a heavily filled tooth and veneers or bonding on the teeth beside it, all shade-matched so they read as one smile.

Will whitening change the colour of a veneer or crown?

No. Whitening lifts natural teeth only. If you want a brighter shade, whiten first, then we match the new work to your new colour.

Does bonding ruin your teeth?

No. Bonding is applied straight onto the tooth, often with no drilling and no needles, so it keeps all of your own tooth. It can chip or stain over the years, and it's easy to repair when it does.

How do I know if my tooth needs a crown instead?

It comes down to how much healthy tooth is left. A tooth that's cracked, heavily filled or root-canal treated usually needs a crown to hold it together. We'll tell you straight at your consult.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain holds its colour and stands up well to daily life. With good cleaning and regular check-ups, veneers last many years. How you care for them, and whether you grind, makes the biggest difference.
