How we treat jaw pain

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. Step 1 Check your jaw and bite

We examine your jaw, how your teeth meet, and the wear on them to work out what's overloading the joint.

  2. Step 2 Explain the cause

We talk you through what we've found in plain words, and refer you on if something needs a specialist.

  3. Step 3 Scan and make your splint

We take a digital scan and make a custom splint to fit your bite exactly, so it's comfortable to wear.

  4. Step 4 Fit, advise and review

We fit your splint, give you simple advice on habits, and check back in to see how your pain and headaches are settling.

Why have your jaw pain treated with us

  • We find the cause

We check your jaw, bite and tooth wear to work out what's overloading the joint, not just quieten the pain.

  • A splint made to your bite

Your custom splint is scanned and made to fit exactly, so it takes the load off your joint and is comfortable to wear.

  • Honest, gentle care

We explain things in plain words, won't over-promise, and refer you on if something needs a specialist.

  • Health funds welcome

Many funds contribute toward a splint and we claim on the spot, so you usually only pay the gap.

Jaw pain questions

What does a TMJ problem actually feel like?

Common signs are jaw pain or tightness, a click, pop or grind when you open, a jaw that catches or locks, and headaches around the temples and ears. We can check whether your jaw joint is the cause at a visit.

Will a splint cure my jaw pain?

We can't promise a cure, and results vary. What a custom splint often does is take the load off the joint and muscles, which for many people eases the jaw pain and settles the headaches over time.

How is this different from a grinding splint?

They're closely related. Grinding splints mainly protect your teeth from wear, while a TMJ splint is made to take the load off the joint and muscles. Often the same custom splint helps with both, and we'll make yours to suit your case.

Do my headaches really come from my jaw?

They can. When the jaw muscles are overloaded by clenching or an uneven bite, the tension can show up as headaches around the temples and ears. Easing the load on the joint often helps quieten them, though it isn't the cause for everyone.

Does my health fund cover it?

Many funds contribute toward a custom splint, including nib, HCF, Westfund and Latrobe. We claim on the spot and tell you the gap before you go ahead, and 0% interest payment plans are available through our partner DentiCare on approval.
