What to expect
Four steps. No surprises.
- Step 1 Find the cause
We check the tooth and take an x-ray to see the infection, including the part hiding below the surface.
- Step 2 Ease the pain
With the area fully numbed, we clean the infection out of the inside of the tooth. Sedation is available if you are nervous.
- Step 3 Seal the tooth
We disinfect and seal the canals so the infection cannot come back.
- Step 4 Protect it
A root-treated tooth is often best capped with a crown so it stays strong for the long run. We will plan that with you.

Root canal questions
Does a root canal hurt?
The treatment is done with the area fully numbed, so you should not feel pain during it. Most people find it much like a longer filling. It is the infection beforehand that hurts, and the treatment is what ends it.
Why not just pull the tooth out?
An extraction is quicker on the day, but it leaves a gap that lets bone shrink and teeth drift, which costs more to fix later. Keeping your own tooth is usually the better long-term choice, and we will give you an honest view of your options.
How many visits does it take?
Some teeth are done in a single visit, others need two. It depends on the tooth and the infection. We will tell you what to expect for your tooth before we begin.
Will I need a crown afterwards?
Often, yes. A root-treated tooth can become brittle, so a crown is frequently recommended to hold it together and protect it. We will explain whether yours needs one.
