Understanding your options
Check suitability before whitening
Whitening can lighten some tooth discolouration, but it is not suitable for everyone or every cause of staining. A dental assessment helps identify what is causing the colour change and whether whitening is an appropriate option.
A dental professional may discuss in-chair or supervised take-home treatment. Ask how to use the product, which results are realistic for your teeth and what to do if you experience sensitivity or irritation. Your dentist should also check how existing restorations may affect the proposed result.
Before starting, discuss the benefits, possible harms and full cost. Do not assume a stronger product or a faster advertised treatment is the right choice for you.

Whitening questions
Why didn't the strips work for me?
It's not you. Store strips use a weaker gel and don't fit your teeth exactly, so the result is light and patchy and fades fast. Professional whitening uses a stronger gel that's matched to your teeth, which is why it reaches further and lasts longer.
In-chair or take-home, which is better?
Neither is better, they just suit different people. In-chair is done at the clinic in about an hour and is the fastest way to see a change. Take-home trays are custom-made and worn over a couple of weeks, and they're easy to top up later. We'll help you pick at your free consult.
How many shades whiter will I get?
That varies from person to person, depending on your starting colour and what's causing the staining. We can't promise a set number of shades, but we'll give you a realistic idea of what to expect at your consult.
Does it hurt my gums?
Some people get short-lived sensitivity, but professional whitening is done after a check of your teeth and gums, which lowers the chance of trouble. If your teeth are sensitive, tell us and we'll adjust the approach.
How long does it last?
Whitening isn't permanent, no matter how it's done. How long it lasts comes down to habits like coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. With good care and the odd top-up, many people keep their results looking good for a long time.
