Can the tooth be kept?
Root canal treatment aims to keep a damaged or infected tooth by cleaning and sealing the spaces inside its roots. Your dentist examines the tooth and may take an X-ray to assess whether it can be restored. Some cases need referral to an endodontist.
Treatment can take several visits. The tooth may then need a filling or crown. Ask whether the proposed quote includes that final restoration and any follow-up appointments.
Treatment cannot guarantee that a tooth will last indefinitely. Possible complications include recurrent infection or the need for further treatment. Extraction may be another option, depending on the tooth and your circumstances. Discuss the benefits, risks and consequences of each option before deciding.

What to expect
Four steps. No surprises.
- Step 1 Find the cause
We check the tooth and take an x-ray to see the infection, including the part hiding below the surface.
- Step 2 Ease the pain
With the area fully numbed, we clean the infection out of the inside of the tooth. Sedation is available if you are nervous.
- Step 3 Seal the tooth
We disinfect and seal the canals so the infection cannot come back.
- Step 4 Protect it
A root-treated tooth is often best capped with a crown so it stays strong for the long run. We will plan that with you.

Root canal questions
Does a root canal hurt?
The treatment is done with the area fully numbed, so you should not feel pain during it. Most people find it much like a longer filling. It is the infection beforehand that hurts, and the treatment is what ends it.
Why not just pull the tooth out?
An extraction is quicker on the day, but it leaves a gap that lets bone shrink and teeth drift, which costs more to fix later. Keeping your own tooth is usually the better long-term choice, and we will give you an honest view of your options.
